Oh I hope that this will be me. I just love the color and softness of this story board! I'm really digging Granny! I'm into Grandma's too. They are the best thing since slice bread! Great job Jana!

I just stumbled upon this. What a fun idea for a blog! Both of you are amazing artists. How did you both start into children's book illustration? I am starting to look into it myself.

Pixiepoo- We're so glad you found our blog!

I'll let Janee tell you her story of how she started doing children's illustration and give you a brief outline of how i did-
1. drew since forever
2. drew for free. self published a comic, 'Very Vicky', with my husband for a few years- a great, harsh learning experience. i had to draw all kinds of people doing all kinds of things. the first few issues are really hard to look at, but i got the hang of it by issue 6. sadly, the birth of twins conflicted with the crazy publishing schedule, so we had to stop.
3. contacted local parenting papers to see if they could use some illos, which they did, did lots and lots of these for very little money over a period of years for papers all over the US and Australia. This was a great way to naturally develop a style- for the most part these papers have tiny budgets and were very happy to have art and didnt mind me experimenting with styles. this was a great way to develop a portfolio.
4. got an agent
5. did lots and lots of educational work and continue to do some. this is great for giving you a portfolio to show to publishers. through this i was found for several picture books- which is great, 'cause its what i've always wanted to do!

I hope that helps!

Thanks for visiting, Pixie, and thanks for the lovely comments!

I started out in advertising and corporate design. In an effort to save my soul, I decided to switch to a more deserving client...kids. :-)

I started out by taking any job I could get. I figured I was making art for my portfolio anyway, I might as well get paid for it even if the pay wasn't up to "industry standards."

That really helped me build my portfolio, so I could seek an illustration rep.

Once I signed with a rep, we worked to further build my portfolio, and then the jobs started coming in.

My advice when people are starting out is to use things like Illustration Friday to help you build a cracking portfolio. It's really your most important marketing tool.
